Technical Editing: Information & Registration

Are you a crochet pattern designer looking to take your patterns to the next level? Are you looking for someone to triple check your pattern to make sure the math is correct? Are you looking for someone to go through your pattern with a fine tooth comb to catch any typos and/or inconsistencies?

I offer technical editing services for traditional and Tunisian crochet patterns in US terms! As your tech editor, I will:

  • Ensure all of the necessary information for a reader to be able to make your design is present.
  • Catch grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
  • Check for consistent formatting and language.
  • Clarify instructions or language based on industry standards.
  • Verify all numbers and calculations.
  • Make sure that finished sizing makes sense with your gauge.
  • Review schematics and charts for correctness.
  • Help you with any other concerns you may have and cheer you on throughout the whole process!

Upon request, I can also help with grading, yardage estimates, and stitch diagram creation.

Why Me?

I have an educational background in math and engineering, and am naturally a very detail-oriented perfectionist. I have tested patterns for many designers who have appreciated my detailed feedback. I am also familiar with writing crochet patterns myself, so I know what sections and information need to be included in a clear, well-written pattern. To further refine and enhance my editing skills, I also completed the "How to become a tech editor" course run by well-established tech editor, Emily of Fiat Fiber Arts. I am truly passionate about helping others produce their best work and want to support the creative community in any way I can.

Tech Editing Process

If you would like me to tech edit your pattern(s), please fill out the form at the bottom of this page to register as a client. I will reply via email within 1 business day confirming your registration. This is a one-time registration. Once that is complete, we can move on to the next steps of editing your pattern(s)! Please note that by registering as a Yarn Matter Technical Editing client, you are not obligated to use my services.

Estimate

It is difficult to estimate how long a pattern will take to edit without seeing a draft first. However, here are some rough estimates for the time it would take to perform one round of editing:

  • Simple accessories or home decor: 1 - 2 hours
  • Complex accessories or home decor, and simple garments: 2 - 3 hours
  • Complex garments: 3+ hours
  • Garment grading and yardage estimates: 1+ hour(s) (in addition to the edit time)

Once you have a pattern ready for editing, please email me a draft of the pattern and let me know if there is anything specific you need help with. I will look over your pattern to generate a pricing estimate based on the amount of time I believe it will take me to edit the pattern. I charge $30 USD per hour of editing (in 15 minute increments) and I generally have a turnaround time of 5-7 business days. However, if you require both grading and editing services, this will lengthen the turnaround time. Should you need the pattern sooner, we can try to work around your schedule. Once you agree to the estimate, I can begin editing!

After the First Round of Editing

Once the first round of editing is complete, we can discuss additional rounds of editing and/or a final check. Both are charged at the same $30 USD / hour rate. If the final check takes 15 minutes or less, it will be free of charge. Please allow me at least 2 business days to complete any additional rounds of editing.

Payment

I will send you an invoice with the agreed upon amount after the last round of editing. Payment is due within 14 days of the invoice date. Please let me know within the 14-day period if you need more time to complete the payment.

Mistake Policy

Should you discover any errors in your pattern after I have done a final check, please contact me immediately so I can work with you to make it right. I stand by my work and want to make sure you are completely satisfied with your edit, so I will correct any mistakes found at no charge. If you make edits and publish the pattern without me doing a final check, I cannot guarantee that the pattern will be error-free.

Privacy Policy

I agree to keep any documents you send me, any documents arising from this service, and the information contained in these documents confidential. I will only send these documents to you, unless otherwise directed by you.

I look forward to working with you and helping your patterns look professional and publication-ready! If you have any questions before we begin the process, please feel free to reach out.
